Licensing Software

Overview

Many software vendors provide academic licenses which allow an organisation to purchase software licenses at a discounted rate. Vendors will inform you if you are eligible to purchase an academic license however the scheme operated by Microsoft is set out below.

Using Microsoft Software within an Education Establishment

Microsoft have a series of Microsoft Academic Volume Licensing programs to provide simple and flexible, volume-based pricing for education customers. Using these, you will typically save around 80% on the cost of software.

Microsoft offers two methods of licensing software for educational use.

• Subscription Programmes – With the Subscription Programmes you pay a lower annual fee and receive an annual license to run software, with the right to upgrade to new releases. At the end of each subscription period, you can either renew, pay to convert your licenses to perpetual ones or stop using the software. The two subscription schemes for education are Campus Agreement and School Agreement.

• Perpetual Programmes – With the Perpetual Programmes you pay a one-off fee and receive a license to use a specific version of the software forever. The recommended scheme for education is the Select License, which offers the largest savings in return for an agreed volume of license purchases. Although there are a minimum number of licenses, even small schools can qualify for the Select License by purchasing through Blue Box IT.

Using Microsoft Software for Staff and Students’ Home PCs

As an individual in education, you can buy Microsoft software for your personal use at a reduced cost. Some of the options are available from Blue Box IT in their capacity as a Microsoft Certified Partner.

Microsoft Education Reseller

Microsoft has developed a range of licences and agreements for education organisations. These types of discounted licences are not availble to buy direct however are available through Microsoft’s network of Authorised Education Resellers to eligible educational users.

As an Authorised Education Reseller, Blue Box IT have demonstrated the ability to provide accurate, high quality advice on Microsoft’s academic licensing schemes and we are also able to both supply and install academic solutions for you.

Eligible institutions able to acquire Microsoft Academic Edition products include the following:

A) Educational Institution
An academic or vocational institution accredited by the applicable governmental regulatory agency in the country in which the Education institution has its principal offices; or

A not for profit non-academic and/or non-government recognised full time teaching institution/organisation

B) Administrative offices of an educational institution
The local, regional or national administrative offices of one or more Educational Institutions described above

C) Faculty and staff
Full and Part Time Faculty and Staff of an Educational Institution as defined above

D) Students
Full and Part Time Matriculated Students of an Educational Institution as defined above

E) A teaching hospital or medical training school
Those parts, sections or departments of a teaching hospital or medical training school that are dedicated to the teaching of medicine.

F) Public Libraries
A public library that provides basic general library services without charge to all residents of a given community, district or region

G) Public museums
A public museum organised on a permanent basis essentially for educational or aesthetic purposes that utilises a professional staff and regularly exhibits tangible objects to the public

H) Public research establishements
A public research establishment fully funded by government on a local, national or European level

I) Charitable organisation
A charitable organisation that operates on a not-for-profit basis and whose aim is i) the relief of poverty ii) the advancement of education; iii) the advancement of social and community welfare; iv) the advancement of culture or v) the advancement of the natural environment.
